ALBUM SPOTLIGHT: ‘Revengeseekerz’ - Jane Remover
Jane Remover recently released her third studio album ‘Revengeseekerz’ and has honed her frenetic, electronic style to create perhaps her best work yet.
The album was led by the singles ‘JRJRJR’ and ‘Dancing with your eyes closed’, which set a high bar for what was to come. After her 2023 album ‘Census Designated’, which was a shoegaze record, it wasn’t clear what direction she would take. This was amplified by the wide range of work she had released in years gone by, with 2021’s ‘Frailty’ being a digicore, indietronica release and her multiple side projects such as ‘leroy (dariacore/mashup)’ and venturing (indie rock/dream pop) both offering something entirely different. Some excellent singles released in the meantime, which had more pop and r&b influence, leaving the sound of her next album up in the air.
However, when ‘JRJRJR’ was released as the lead single, it made a statement that this would in fact be an electronic album. It was a hectic, rage banger, characterised by some incredibly dense production and layered vocals. It also features a sample of Palkia’s cry from Pokémon, the first of many interesting sample bites. ‘Dancing with your eyes closed’ had less of a rage sound and instead headed in more of a hyperpop direction. There was still the incredibly layered production and vocals, however there were more pop influences, especially in the vocals.
This larger focus on the vocals and singing is also exemplified in tracks like ‘TWICE REMOVED’, the intro track, ‘Dark night castle’ and ‘Fadeoutz’. ‘Fadeoutz’ especially strips it back and lets Jane really sing her heart out, touching on topics like alienation, dealing with fame, and isolation. It also features the first use of a sample of a Fortnite ping, another funny sample that comes up again further into the album.
‘Dreamflasher’ and ‘TURN UP OR DIE’ are perhaps the craziest electronic showcases on the album, with a wide array of influences from hardstyle, to electro pop, to digicore. These tracks show off Jane’s producing prowess off the best and you can feel Jane’s passion behind every single song’s beat. Additionally, ‘Dreamflasher’ has those digicore elements that feel reminiscent of some of Jane’s older production, which is present on her 2021 album ‘Frailty’.
One of the best parts of the various samples featured on this album is how Jane frequently samples or interpolates her other work. On ‘Star people’ there are samples from ‘buzzcut, daisy’, from ‘Frailty’, ‘bluuuueeeee’, from her side project ‘leroy’s’ album ‘Dariacore’, and ‘Famous girl’, from another side project of her’s, ‘venturing’, on the album ‘Ghostholding’. Additionally, it interpolates the guitar riff from ‘Magic I Want U’, one of the singles released in between albums. This is just one track, yet almost every track has similar amounts of cool and interesting samples behind the scenes.
‘angels in camo’ and ‘Professional Vengeance’ are both nice tracks that really bridge the gap between songs, with the latter falling between the stripped back ‘Fadeoutz’ and ‘Dark night castle’. This really aids the album by keeping the energy high and bumping, without taking away from the emotional aspects of the more toned down tracks. ‘angels in camo’ falls between ‘Experimental Skin’ and ‘Dreamflasher’, which are two of the most frenetic songs on the album and manages to keep the liveliness consistent without overwhelming you. The album suffers from some of its own success however, with the constant energy feeling a little repetitive at some points, causing some of the tracks to blend together a little. The break in flow that ‘Fadeoutz’ and ‘Dark night castle’ provide are great and perhaps could’ve been taken advantage of a little more in order to not feel too repetitive.
This doesn’t take away from the quality of the album at all though, with perhaps the best track in Jane’s discography being on the album, ‘Psychoboost’ with Danny Brown. Danny exists on an interesting plane, where he is incredibly ingrained in the alternative and experimental hip hop scene while still showing love to a wide array of musicians and artists that many may not be familiar with. The Danny Brown Show has been an excellent way for Danny to share his love for music in all genres and facets and Jane has been mentioned over the years by Danny as someone killing it, so it’s awesome to see the two finally release a track together. The song itself is great, with the feverish pace that is present so much on this album and some of the most intense production that a Jane Remover song has ever had.
Jane’s ‘TURN UP OR DIE’ tour starts very soon across America and I’m sure it’s gonna be a loud and colourful affair.
